San Francisco 49ers' Raheem Mostert to have season-ending knee surgery

Sept. 14 (UPI) — San Francisco 49ers starting running back Raheem Mostert will miss the remainder of the 2021 season because of a significant knee injury.

Mostert announced Tuesday on social media that he will have season-ending knee surgery in the near future. On Monday, the 49ers said the tailback could return in about eight weeks after a minor arthroscopic procedure, but further consultations with doctors changed that timeline.

“After consulting with multiple doctors and weighing my options, I will be having season-ending surgery to repair my knee,” Mostert wrote in a statement posted to Twitter. “This gives me, without a doubt in my mind, the best possibility at coming back 110%. I have always come back stronger and I will this time too!

“I have faith in myself, my doctors, my support system, my team, and God. He makes no mistakes!!”

Mostert suffered the knee injury during the 49ers’ 41-33 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday. He had two carries for 20 yards on the 49ers’ second offensive possession, but he went to the sideline soon after a 9-yard gain on the second play of the series.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Mostert would miss about eight weeks due to “chipped cartilage” in a knee that would require surgery. Mostert, however, sought multiple opinions to ensure he returned at full strength. Those additional opinions directed him to have a procedure that required a longer recovery period.

With Mostert out for the rest of the season, the 49ers signed former Detroit Lions running back Kerryon Johnson to their practice squad Tuesday. Johnson joins a 49ers backfield that includes rookies Elijah Mitchell and Trey Sermon and second-year back JaMycal Hasty.

The 49ers placed Mostert and veteran cornerback Jason Verrett (torn right ACL) on injured reserve Tuesday, and the team signed cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick. The club also promoted cornerback Dontae Johnson from the practice squad.
