Smart cookies know that raw cookie dough is unsafe to eat, yet it’s still terribly tempting to sample a spoonful of batter. Fortunately, Ben & Jerry’s has shared a safe and scrumptious recipe for how to make edible cookie dough at home.
The iconic ice cream maker recently revealed its spin on the sweet treat, in an egg-free recipe that calls for heat treating the flour. On their own, eggs and untreated flour are likely to contain contaminants such as salmonella and E. coli, Ben & Jerry’s warned.
To heat treat the flour, the Vermont-based brand recommended using the microwave or a conventional oven. For a quick fix, microwave flour until it reaches 165 F throughout, and confirm the temperature with an instant-read thermometer. For the oven method, spread the flour on a baking sheet and bake at 300 F for two-minute intervals, checking the temperature until the flour reaches 165 F throughout.
Acknowledging that home chefs “could” theoretically bake this mixture into actual cookies, Ben & Jerry’s suggested that the edible cookie dough bites would taste even better in a bowl of ice cream.
According to the instructions, the edible cookie dough can be stored for up to one week in the refrigerator or up to six months in the freezer.
“Euphoria now, euphoria later!” Ben & Jerry’s exclaimed.
- 8 tbsp. unsalted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 tbsp. heavy cream
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- ½ tsp. kosher salt
- 1 cup flour
- ½ cup chocolate chips
- Heat treat the flour with either the oven or microwave method, until flour is 165 F throughout. “Do not skip this step, untreated flour can contain contaminants and is not safe to eat,” Ben & Jerry’s advised.
- With a stand or hand mixer, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Add in the vanilla, cream and salt, mixing to combine. Then, add in the heat treated flour. Next, stir in chocolate chips.
- Serve and enjoy! Store any uneaten dough in an airtight container in the fridge.
